Taking on a student leadership role is invaluable preparation for the workforce.
Student leaders take part in an extensive leadership training program provided by the College before starting their roles.
Elected roles - such as College Club Committee member, sports captains and performing arts directors - learn event management and peer leadership skills that are readily transferrable. Students in pastoral care roles - such as Residential Advisors and Wellbeing Team members - learn interpersonal and emergency response skills. Academic tutors learn teaching skills. Leadership roles provide practical experience and demonstrate a student’s competency and success to future employers.
In addition to attending tutorials, students may in turn choose to become academic tutors as their studies progress.
Becoming a tutor helps students develop a deeper understanding of their field, offers access to training in teaching methods and financial incentives. Being a university residential college tutor also enhances a student’s resume.
Networking and mentoring programs connect students with alumni working in their chosen field or industry.
Mentors can share their experiences, help students discover their own career path and provide opportunities for work experience and professional development.
The mentoring program pairs working professionals with senior students in their field to help with the major transition into professional life.
A thought-provoking program of guest speakers helps expand our students’ world view and encourage new ways of thinking.
It offers students the chance to hear insights from a range of invited guest speakers. Previous guests include the late former Prime Minister Gough Whitlam, various musicians, the Governor of South Australia, art curators, brewers, doctors, nutritionists, agricultural scientists, climate change experts, politicians and many distinguished alumni.
Making connections with alumni and working professionals keeps students up-to-date with industry news and shows employers that they’re engaged and interested.
